On my third day in NYC I took the
subway to South Ferry to head to the Statue Of Liberty. Sitting in the subway I
heard some people speaking in Swiss German. It was the first time after weeks,
hearing my language, so I was delighted to talk to them. They are all working
as flight attendants for the Swiss and stayed in New York for one day.
To get to the Statue Of Liberty you
have to take the ferry. It’s a quick ride, about 15 minutes. Once you’re there
you can walk around the small island in about 5-10 minutes and glance at the
skyline of New York and see the Statue Of Liberty from different angles. I didn’t
go up. But it was really nice to be there and enjoy the view.
Let's take a closer look.
Back in New York City I went to see
the One World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial. It was one of this saddening
and moving moments again. Remembering all those who died on that Tuesday years
ago. Even I as a Swiss still remember what I was doing on that day, when I
heard the news.
(’m already in Chicago, as I’m
writing this post and scrolling through pictures of the skyline, then Susie, one
of my roommates at the hostel, who’s from New York, walks by, takes a look at
the photos and tells me the story of her daughter and how she survived the terror
attack. Her daughter used to work next to the World Trade Center and was on her
way to work, as it all happened. Susie remembers, how she’s been worrying about
her daughter, didn’t hear from hear for hours and how relieved she was, as she
finally found out, that her daughter is alive. I’m touched by her story. We’ve
talked for some time and she told me a lot about her live. I really enjoy her
company.
From the One World Trade Center I
walked to the Brooklyn Bridge and crossed it. You get to see a different
skyline of New York and once again I was mesmerized by this city. On my way back
I came across the Flatiron Building, which was built in 1902 and is famous for
its shape.
