Exploring the Badlands and Deadwood

Exploring the Badlands National Park in South Dakota was really fun and pretty nice.

Before we went on a beautiful hike there, we learned about the history of the Badlands. The formation has emerged through deposition and erosion. The Lakota named it “Mako Sica”, which means “land bad”, because of the lack of water, the hot summers and harsh winters and because of the exposed rugged compound. Also our tour guide warned us to watch for bears,
bison and rattlesnakes.

Given all this information, we started at the bottom of the Badlands rocks. We had to climb up a pretty steep path.
Once we arrived on top, we were rewarded with a stunning view over the national park.
The rest of the hike led us through the wild landscape of some part of the Badlands. The weather was hot, but we enjoyed our time there though, even always a bit worried to step on a rattlesnake, so we watched the ground carefully.

After the hike, we drove out to some view points, to enjoy different vistas over the Badlands.
Then we were on our way to Deadwood, a western town founded in 1876 during a gold rush. It is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We had fun exploring the historic town, though it was pretty touristic.
We joined a show at the famous No. 10 Saloon, where the shooting of Wild Bill Hickok, a legend of the town, is frequently re-enacted. It was quite fun.

After some yummy ice cream we drove back to our hotel in Custer.
